Brown Trout: GoodDry Fly: PrimePressure: Low

The upper Manistee is fishing beautifully for wild browns on dry flies and nymphs. Water is clear and cold — long leaders and careful wading are essential. Evening sulphur hatches have been the most productive window. Less crowded than the lower tailwater.

The Upper Manistee fishes like a smaller Au Sable — clear, technical, and rewarding for patient dry fly anglers. Evening hatches from May through July are the prime window.

High-stick nymphing between pools and in riffles. The upper river has a natural gravel and sand substrate — small naturalistic patterns outperform attractors.

Euro nymphing is well-suited to the upper Manistee's riffles and runs. Fine tippets and small flies match the river's invertebrate profile.

Streamers on the upper Manistee are most productive in early spring before the hatches begin, and in fall when brown trout are aggressive pre-spawn. Swing medium-sized Sculpins through deep pools at dusk.

The Upper Manistee is a classic northern Michigan trout stream — intimate, spring-fed, and wild. From its headwaters near Grayling all the way to Hodenpyl Dam, the upper river runs through deep Huron-Manistee National Forest with a sandy/gravel bottom and cold, gin-clear water. This is dry fly and nymph water — technical, rewarding, and far less pressured than the famous tailwater below Tippy Dam. The upper river hosts self-sustaining populations of wild brown and brook trout that have thrived since the original German brown trout plantings in the late 1800s. Lined with cedar, hemlock, and white pine, the upper corridor looks much as it did when the first fly fishers discovered it.

Did you know
The Upper Manistee above Grayling is one of the few Michigan rivers that qualifies as a true headwater cold-water stream — water temperatures rarely exceed 65°F even in midsummer, making it a year-round refuge for wild trout.
Did you know
The Manistee is a designated Wild and Scenic River — the longest river entirely within Michigan's Lower Peninsula at 190 miles. The upper section above Tippy Dam is the most undisturbed portion of the entire watershed.
