Rifle River Fishing Report
The upper Rifle in the Recreation Area is fishing well for wild brown trout on small dries and nymphs. Water clarity is excellent — long leaders and careful wading are essential. The sulphur and light cahill hatches are dependable in June evenings.

River History & Character
The Rifle River flows 65 miles from its headwaters at Devoe Lake in Ogemaw County southeast to Saginaw Bay near Omer. It is one of Michigan's most historically significant trout streams and carries the distinction of being a designated Blue Ribbon trout stream in its upper reaches. The state undertook one of its first major stream improvement programs on the Rifle in the 1940s and 1950s, stabilizing eroded banks, adding cover structures, and dramatically improving trout populations — work that influenced stream management practices statewide for decades. The upper Rifle corridor, much of it within the Rifle River Recreation Area and Ogemaw State Forest, protects ten-plus miles of public access water in a scenic, largely undeveloped watershed of hardwood forest and rolling hills. The most notable tributary is Houghton Creek, where a 37-inch brown trout was caught in 1952 and stood as the state record for many years.
