Brown Trout: ExcellentHex BuildingMason Tract: Prime

The South Branch Mason Tract is in prime form. Wild browns are rising to sulphurs and brown drakes in the evenings, and the Hex hatch is building — watch water temps. The remote stretches between Chase and Smith Bridge are producing the best fish. Plan for a full-day wade-in — this is not a river you rush.

The South Branch is a walk-in wilderness fishery. Pack light but bring a map — the Mason Tract has multiple miles of remote water. Afternoon BWO and evening Sulphur hatches are the main events.

rod Nymphing Tips
Nymphing the South Branch's deep pools and undercut banks produces well between hatches. Pheasant Tails and Hare's Ears in size 14–16 are reliable.

Euro nymphing the South Branch's sandy-bottom runs. The lack of current structure makes reading the water critical — focus on seams near logs and undercuts.

Nighttime streamer fishing in the South Branch's deep pools produces trophy brown trout. Mouse patterns during the Hex hatch window (late June) are highly effective.

The South Branch of the Au Sable flows through what is arguably the most storied piece of fly fishing real estate in Michigan — the Mason Tract. This 1,500-acre wilderness preserve was gifted to the State of Michigan by auto executive Chase Salmon Osborn and later championed by Detroit newspaper publisher George Mason, whose estate donated the core 1,500 acres of wild river corridor in 1954. The South Branch winds for miles through remote cedar swamp and jack pine forest without a road crossing, creating a true wilderness wading experience rarely found in the Lower Peninsula. The river is designated flies-only and catch-and-release throughout much of the Mason Tract, and its population of large, wild brown trout rivals any stream in the state. The river runs cold, clear, and spring-fed year-round, making it one of the most thermally stable branches of the Au Sable system.

Did you know
The Mason Tract stretch of the South Branch has no road access for several miles — to fish its heart, you must wade in or canoe, a deliberate design that keeps it among the least-pressured quality trout water in Michigan.
Did you know
George Mason, whose family donated the Mason Tract, was a passionate fly fisherman who insisted the land be preserved specifically for public recreation and conservation — a rare act of philanthropic restraint that has protected this fishery for seventy years.
