Flows are around 374 cfs and holding steady, about normal for late August — though that is the Tahquamenon River near Paradise gauge, not Fox (UP).

Brook Trout: ExcellentSolitude: MaximumAccessibility: Remote

Wild brook trout are actively feeding on small dries and soft hackles. The tannin-stained water requires natural drifts and extreme stealth — these fish spook easily. Pack in, pack out. No crowds, no cell signal, no shortcuts — this is the real thing.

Borrowed gauge

There is no USGS gauge on the Fox, and none anywhere near Seney. These figures come from the Tahquamenon near Paradise — a different watershed, useful only as an eastern UP wetness signal.

fly Dry Fly Tips
Fox River UP brook trout are aggressive and relatively easy to catch on dry flies — the challenge is the remote access and brutal mosquitoes. Any visible adult dry fly works. Focus on pool tail-outs in morning and evening.

Simple nymphing rig for UP brook trout. One fly on a short leader fished through pools and runs. The Fox's fish are not pressured — presentation doesn't need to be perfect.

rod Euro Nymph Tips
Euro nymphing works on the Fox's riffles but is overkill for the fishing. A simple nymph rig produces the same results with less complexity in the remote setting.
Small bead nymphs size 14–18
fish Streamer Tips
Small streamers produce the Fox's largest brook trout from deeper pools. A slow-stripped Muddler through a dark pool at dusk is one of the UP's finest fishing experiences.

The Fox River of the Upper Peninsula is a small, remote brook trout stream running through Schoolcraft County in Michigan's wild UP. Fed by tannin-rich bog waters, it runs a characteristic amber-tea color that does nothing to deter the brilliant wild brook trout that call it home. Hemingway fished the Fox and the nearby Two-Hearted River extensively after WWI, immortalizing this landscape in "Big Two-Hearted River" — one of his most celebrated short stories, set on this river despite the name change. The surrounding country is among the most remote and undeveloped in the Lower 48.

Did you know
Hemingway's short story "Big Two-Hearted River" is actually set along the Fox River — he changed the name because "Two-Hearted" was more evocative, calling it "the most perfect title" he'd ever found.
Did you know
The Fox River Pathway offers 27 miles of backcountry trail through pure wilderness, giving access to completely wild brook trout water that sees very few anglers each season.
