Salmon & Steelhead on the St. Joseph
Run status is rebuilt twice a day from the live gauge and the DNR's own run windows. The windows are typical timing, not a forecast — what actually moves fish is water temperature and a rise, and the run tracker carries both for every river at once.
Kings Chinook Salmon
Peak
Typical: Sep 3 – Nov 3, peak Sep 24 – Oct 14
The latest king run in Michigan. The St. Joe stays warm well into September and fish will not push until it cools.
Coho Coho Salmon
Peak
Typical: Sep 17 – Nov 19, peak Oct 5 – Nov 1
Steelhead Steelhead
First fish
Typical: Sep 30 – Apr 20, peak Oct 30 – Dec 25
Skamania-strain summer steelhead give the St. Joe a run no northern river has.
Upstream limit
Berrien Springs Dam Ladders at Berrien Springs, Buchanan, Niles, South Bend and Mishawaka. Berrien Springs was confirmed passing fish in spring 2025; the rest rests on a 1990s assessment that itself warns the designs are inadequate.
Whose fish
Stocked The stocking record carries both Michigan-strain and Skamania-strain rainbow plants.
Access
Berrien Springs Dam, Niles, Buchanan, the lower river at St. Joseph. Mostly float. Limited wading below the dams.
Crowding
Busy at the dams, quiet elsewhere. Draws a lot of Indiana and Illinois traffic.
Regulations
Different from the northern rivers in several respects. Read the southwest Michigan section of the guide.
What to throw
Big water, heavy sink tips, or swing gear.
DNR The state's weekly fishing report of Sep 30 named salmon on this water. Read the report.
