Spring Steelhead: GoodResident Browns: FairAccessibility: Excellent

Steelhead are the headline act on the Clinton — spring runs from March through May bring the best fishing, with fish stacking in the deeper pools and runs throughout the Rochester and Yates Mill area. Resident browns in the upper reaches above Pontiac respond well to small streamers and nymphs.

fly Dry Fly Tips
Dry fly fishing is productive during BWO hatches in spring and fall and Sulphur hatches in May–June. The Clinton's urban trout are surprisingly selective — fine tippets and accurate presentations required.

rod Nymphing Tips
Nymphing is the primary technique on the Clinton year-round. Steelhead egg patterns in spring (March–April) are extremely effective. Summer nymphing with small caddis larvae produces resident browns.

Euro nymphing is growing in popularity on the Clinton. The river's moderate size is perfect for tight-line techniques — access points along the Clinton River Trail provide good wading water.

Streamer fishing on the Clinton in spring targets steelhead with dark Wooly Buggers and leech patterns. Summer streamer fishing produces smallmouth bass as a bonus species.

The Clinton River is the most accessible trout and steelhead fishery in southeastern Michigan, flowing 77 miles through the northern suburbs of Detroit before emptying into Lake St. Clair at Mount Clemens. For many Michigan fly fishers, the Clinton is their home water — the river where they threw their first streamer, landed their first steelhead, or learned to read current seams. It drains a heavily urbanized watershed spanning Oakland, Macomb, and Lapeer counties, which makes its surviving fishery all the more remarkable. Michigan DNR and the Clinton River Watershed Council have invested decades of effort in improving water quality, removing barriers to fish passage, and restoring riparian habitat. The upper reaches above Pontiac hold surprisingly good populations of resident brown trout in cold, spring-fed stretches, while the lower river below the M-59 corridor becomes one of metro Detroit's most productive steelhead runs each spring and fall.

Did you know
The Clinton River is the closest steelhead fishery to the city of Detroit — anglers from the metro area can be wading for chrome within 45 minutes of leaving downtown, making it the most fished steelhead river in the state by sheer volume of anglers.

Yates Cider Mill in Rochester Hills sits directly on prime Clinton River steelhead water, creating the uniquely Michigan experience of picking up a cider donut and then walking 50 yards to swing flies for steelhead.
